Science Teaching European Network for Creativity and Innovation in Learning

The STENCIL network includes schools, research institutes and relevant institutions in the field of science education from a number of European countries with the aim of promoting the exchange of ideas, practices  and methodologies in science education. The network will have at its disposal the results and the outcomes of the former European project STELLA  - Science Teaching in a Lifelong Learning Approach - and in particular the European online catalogue of science education initiatives and the STELLA eBook “Science Education in European Schools – Selected Practices from the STELLA Catalogue” as useful tools for the identification of good practices all over Europe. The multilingual STELLA web portal -www.stella-science.eu -  appropriately customised and enriched - will provide a platform for communication and collaborative work both inside and outside the network.

According to the original aim of the STELLA web portal, the new STENCIL web portal will target all people interested in science education in Europe, and namely schools and institutions involved in Comenius projects on relevant topics linked to the science education, in order to give them a high visibility and to promote exchange of ideas and collaboration. Members of the network will carry out a wide and common reflection on different aspects of science education, aimed at identifying innovative teaching methodologies and practices carried out at national and European level, also taking advantage of both the STELLA catalogue and eBook, which will be updated and enriched with the contribution of all the partners. The results of this work of research and identification will be published every year in the “Annual Report on the State of Innovation in Science Education”, and will be presented at the annual conferences and events organised by the network at national and international level.

Every year an aspect of science education - which will appear particularly relevant and meaningful also considering priority 5 of the Call for Proposal - will be chosen and deepened by the network and it will represent the main topic of the international conference to be organized every year in a partner country, e.g. key-competences for teaching and learning science; different teaching methodologies in comparison; how to link school, science and society; etc. Furthermore each country will carry out/organise:

ü  a survey to identify good practices and samples of application to be promoted on the web portal

ü  workshops and seminars addressed to all schools and teachers to deepen the subjects and to acquire competences for science education

National and international events will give the occasion for exchanges and study visits by interested teachers and schools. Furthermore the international events will be promoted and broadcasted on the web portal, to allow users to join them from home or from school.

A call for participants will be launched every year to schools interested to transfer a good practice among those highlighted in the annual report and/or presented during an event or study visit. A grant will be given to the winner school, covering translation expenses, while the web site will dedicate a space for the online tutoring and assistance by the school/teacher that originally carried out the practice to the school/teacher transferring it, as well as by experts and other professionals in science education. Monitoring, benchmarking and analysis of results will be carried out on an annual basis and at the end of the project. The results of the 3 years work will be promoted and diffused in a final publication targeting decision makers, stakeholders and educational institutions at national and European level.
